"A site which stirs minds and hearts, a site for remembrance and empowerment"
Inaugurated on the 21st July 1994 for the fiftieth anniversary of the
battle of the Vercors, the Memorial was created in memory of the
tragic events of the Vercors region. It pays tribute to the men and
women who fought for freedom.
This Memorial is the focus point of a trail entitled ‘‘Les Chemins de
la Liberté’’ (The paths to freedom). It is an incitement to discover
the particular sites in the whole Vercors Massif where these events
took place; it is also an incitement to understand better what was
actually played out there.
This project was backed by the “Association Nationale des Pionniers
et Combattants Volontaires du Vercors” (The National Association of
Pioneers and Voluntary Fighters of the Vercors), founded in 1944 by
the civilian head of the Vercors Maquis, Eugène Chavant when the
Vercors Natural Park Authority implemented it.
Choosing the location : Far from any buildings,
alongside cliffs situated in the parish of Vassieux-en-
Vercors, a village honoured by the title of ‘‘Compagnon de
la Libération”, the chosen site overlooks the whole of the
massif and the battlefi eld. Far from the world and far from
sight, the location was chosen intentionally. The building is
sheltered within a rocky environment, in the midst of pine
and juniper trees, and thus is as concealed as the men and
women who took refuge underground.
Upon arrival, the visitor is therefore plunged into the
atmosphere of the Maquis of the Vercors.
Its architecture is in keeping with the natural and
historic site: an imposing presence, it uses concrete to recall
the image of the Vercors as a fortress with its limestone
cliffs. Its sobriety incites the visitor to become meditative.
Moreover, the building follows the fl ow of the land and its
Visit : in contrast with a traditional museum, this
Memorial is a modern museum which calls on visual as well
as sound effects.
